Help for Student Victims of Hurricanes
- Introduction
- Pre-Departure Checklist
1. Introduction
There are many things for you to do before you return home.
This list of practical considerations is meant to assist
you in bringing your time elsewhere to a close.
2. Pre-Departure Checklist
(The following
list is taken from Rediscovering the United
States: A Sojourner’s Reentry. Module
II, University of San Francisco International Student
Services by Christina E. Sanchez, Ph.D.)
1. Fill out forwarding address forms at the Post Office
2. Send friends your change of address information
3. Clear all of your accounts if needed. Leave money with a trusted friend if bills are still outstanding, or, if possible, make arrangements to pay on-line. Notify your creditors that you are leaving in case they have special instructions.
4. Clear your student account if needed so your diploma/transcripts can be released.
5. Order transcripts if you will need them
6. Leave your permanent home address with your department, faculty advisor and others who might wish to be in contact with you
7. Check out of your apartment or dorm. Leave a forwarding address with your manager. Return your keys and request the return of your security deposit, if applicable
8. Give the college/university your permanent home address
9. Return borrowed items to the place/people you borrowed them from
10. Make sure you have email addresses/contact information for everyone you want to stay in touch with!
The process of returning home does not end once you are physically there-it may take some time for you to adjust to being back. To help you with this time of adjustment, you are encouraged to return to this site and visit the section on the Return Home. In it, you will find exercises and information which will be of use to you.
