Help for Student Victims of Hurricanes
- Introduction
- Evaluating your ties at home
1. Introduction
Just as you have changed as a result of your
experience, home has certainly changed due to Katrina as well: your family
may be separated, your home, community, and financial situation
may be completely different,
and your support system of friends and neighbors may not
be totally present or as accessible as before. Before making
the journey home, then, it is
helpful to think about your ties to home and how things have
changed.
2. Evaluating your ties at home
(The following questions are
adapted from Rediscovering the United States: A Sojourner’s Reentry. Module
II, University of San Francisco International Student Services
by Christina E. Sanchez, Ph.D)
- Do you feel informed and close to people at home? Why or why not?
_________________________________________________________________
- What major differences have occurred in your community due to Katrina?
_________________________________________________________________
- Describe your family as you remember them, e.g., characteristics, features, personalities, etc.
- father
- mother
- sisters
- brothers
- other relatives
- What major changes occurred in your family when Katrina hit? Two weeks after it hit? Two months after? How about now?
_________________________________________________________________
- What friends of yours will be at home? Are any of them returning from study at
another institution?
_____________________________________________________________
It is important to think about these changes now, before
you return home. Please continue on the next
exercise, where you will continue to reflect on your semester away and
remind yourself of what you want to take with you.
