Help for Student Victims of Hurricanes
- Introduction
- Preparing for Home
1. Introduction
When you first came to your new institution and
new city after Hurricane Katrina, you had to make decisions
quickly and did not have the luxury of reflecting on that
transition ahead of time. Now, you have
more flexibility to begin thinking about moving back home,
before you actually go. You likely have a mixture of emotions
which may include anticipation,
anxiety, uncertainty, and a host of other feelings. It is
important to acknowledge these feelings and some of the reasons
behind them; the following questions
may help you do so. Please answer the questions below and
record your thoughts in your journal or in some other place
that you can refer to later.
2. Preparing for Home
(The following questions are taken from
the University of the Pacific’s “What’s up with Culture” Module
2, 2.2, developed by Professor Bruce LaBrack)
- The five things that I worry about most when thinking about going home are:
_______________________________________________________________
- The five things I missed most about home since I have been here are:
_______________________________________________________________
- Once I return home the five things (people, places, circumstances, etc.) I believe I will miss the least about living here are:
_______________________________________________________________
- The five things (people, places, activities, etc.) I believe I will miss most from living here once I have returned home are:
________________________________________________________________
You may find that what you are expecting
to be the most difficult about leaving where you are and
going home may not turn out that way. You may also find out
that the way you would have handled things has also changed
due to your experience of the last few months. To find out
how you might have changed, please continue to the next
exercise.
