Help for Student Victims of Hurricanes
About this site
The Center for Global Education at Loyola Marymount University, with support from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) of the U.S. Department of Education, has created this site to assist college and university students affected by Hurricane Katrina. The effects of the hurricane will be felt for a significant period, and complete recovery will take some time. This web resource is meant to help you get the information you need to move forward.
The four sections at the top provide information for students to use as they take their next steps. The first section discusses the challenges that you are facing and provides resources and helpful information to assist you. As a student, figuring out how and where to continue your education next semester and beyond may be challenging. The rest of the sections are divided according to what your options are: returning to your home institution, staying where you are, or going to a different place. You are encouraged to explore each option fully in order to make an informed decision that is right for you.
The links to the left of the page are listed below and are provided as additional resources for you to get help for yourself, for others, and find out what the higher education community is doing to assist students and institutions.
If you are an administrator looking to help, there are many ways that your insitution can become involved in the rebuilding efforts. For some suggestions which go beyond donations and assisting displaced students, please see the section on How You Can Help
As you face the challenge of taking your next steps after the Hurricane, it is important to remember that you are not alone. You are encouraged to use the resources compiled in this site to help you move forward.
