March 19, 2010: California Study Abroad Collaboration Meeting, Whittier College, Whittier, California

This meeting, supported by the California Study Abroad Council and hosted by the Office on International Programs at Whittier College, will focus on expanding collaboration for study abroad across colleges and universities in California, including a focus on ways to support consistent health and safety practices when sharing programs, with a special focus on the recent US Department of State Travel Warning for Mexico and its impact on study abroad programs there.

Through support from sponsors Southern California Consortium on International Studies (SOCCIS), HTH Worldwide, and Renaissance Insurance Agencies, Inc., there is no cost to attend and continental breakfast and lunch will be provided to attendees. April 9, 2010: Health and Safety Workshop for Short-Term Study Abroad Programs - Faculty Director Training, Madison, Wisconsin - Leading Abroad: Preparing Community and Technical College Faculty in Best Practices in Health, Safety, and International Education Program Development

The Madison Area Technical College invites participants to a health and safety training workshop focusing on faculty-led study abroad programs at community colleges. This training workshop is aimed at helping community college faculty and international education staff become better prepared to address health and safety risks when leading short term study abroad programs. The program is recommended for current and prospective faculty program leaders, international education office staff, student services staff working with travel programs, and deans and other administrators with international education programs in their departments.

When: Friday, April 9, 2010, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Where: Madison Area Technical College, Downtown Education Center (211 N. Carroll St, Madison, WI)

This workshop is being offered free of charge (including lunch) as part of an effort to share best practices and expand the capacity of community colleges to be able to offer quality faculty-led programs abroad. Funding support was provided by the Department of Education Title VI Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) program and the Wisconsin Technical College System Leadership Grant program. On April 12, 2010, there will be an Overseas Security Advisory Council, U.S. Department of State (OSAC) Study Abroad Health and Safety Workshop, hosted at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), in Las Vegas, Nevada. On April 16, 2010: the Spring Meeting of the Southern California Consortium on International Studies (SOCCIS) will be hosted on the campus of California State University at Long Beach. The program will include a discussion about increasing opportunities for study abroad collaboration in California as well as other issues supporting international learning at colleges and universities in Southern California. April 29/30, 2010: OSAC International Study Abroad Health and Safety Workshop, Florence, Italy

On April 29th and 30th, 2010 there will be an OSAC International Study Abroad Health and Safety Workshop in Florence, Italy. This will follow the designs of previous OSAC International Health and Safety Workshops in London, United Kingdom; New Delhi, India; and Paris, France.

This free, one-day seminar will be provided to address the issues of on-site study abroad program providers for U.S. college students. The program will focus on issues for U.S. and European colleges and universities providing programs for U.S. students, as well as non-university study abroad providers. Through support from sponsors, there will be no cost to attend. In addition, a visit to the Florence, Italy emergency response center and pre-workshop networking reception will be hosted on Thursday evening, April 29, and a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided to attendees during the all-day workshop on Friday, April 30th.

May 7, 2010: Study Abroad Health and Safety Workshop at Colleges of the Fenway, Boston, Massachusetts

On May 7, 2010, from 9:00am - 4:00pm, a Study Abroad Health and Safety Workshop will be hosted by the Colleges of the Fenway in Boston, Massachusetts. The Workshop will provide information and resources to support effective program development and implementation with a special focus on crisis management, mental health issues, alcohol use and abuse, and sexual harassment and assault.

This free, one-day seminar will be provided to address critical study abroad health and safety issues for U.S. colleges and universities and study abroad providers. Through support from HTH Worldwide, there will be no cost to attend the workshop, which will include continental breakfast and lunch. The purpose of the workshop is to support resource sharing and enhance collaboration between the study abroad field and U.S. government agencies in the area of health and safety abroad.
