About Discrimination
Policy Information:The undeniable truth is that discrimination exists in the United States and abroad. However, in different countries and regions, discrimination provides challenges for students, which could be more intense than those found at home. Therefore, administrators should help students understand the realities abroad and have some idea of whether students will be studying in a country or region where the challenges of discrimination may exist. In some cases, a student may feel too unsafe or too burdened to participate in a program held in a country or region where discrimination against his or her race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender or disability is a concern.
It is important to discuss the issue of discrimination during pre-departure advising sessions and orientation sessions. If students know to expect certain attitudes and customs and have discussed ways to deal with them constructively, it may be easier for them to handle discrimination when faced with it abroad.
