University of California, Education Abroad Program
Student Guide
Meals
The meal situation will vary significantly, depending on living arrangements. Students in Study Center-arranged housing will have cooking privileges. Variation will also be the case during the field portion of the program, especially for those not staying with families. Supermarket food is comparable to that of the U.S., although there is much less frozen food available. There is plenty of fresh fruit at reasonable prices in the public markets. Hot meals are sold in the markets as well.
Water
Students should not drink tap water unless it has been boiled for 15 to 20 minutes. When eating out, students should drink only bottled water and beverages (without ice), or tea and coffee. Bottled water is readily available.
